Aloha!  My name is Kay Therkelsen,  and I have the honor and pleasure of being the Event Coordinator for the upcoming 14th Annual Layton City Aloha Festival Luau. The purpose of the Aloha Festival is to award scholarships to graduating high school seniors who plan to enroll in college beginning Fall of 2016.  The scholarships may be used towards a Utah and/or Hawai'i based college.

The  "CRUISE ON IN - HULA ON OUT" Custom Car, Bike & Toy Show is a fundraiser event which all proceeds will go directly to the Ili O' Polynesia Dance Studios Scholarship Program.

 

 The idea for a car show came to mind as I was born & raised in a very influential home of an Automotive & Marine enthusiast.  My dad loved to go fast and his passion was to go faster.  He was well known across many Drag Strips, lakes, snow covered mountain tops and the dunes of the Little Sahara Recreational area "better known as Sand Mountain.  He was the one everyone wanted to beat yet rarely did he allow them to do so.  His obsession to tinker with toys lead him to own OTTO'S AUTO & MARINE, a successful  High Performance Automotive & Marine Shop for more than 28 years.  He was  featured in several newspaper articles, magazine publications and even seen on television for a variety of automotive related stories.  

He managed a crew of 28 men and enjoyed Off Road Racing events like the Baja 500 & The Baja 1000.   He competed in mulitple Offshore Boat Racing Events, Wetbike races in Lake Havasu, Arizona, Demolitian Derbys etc etc.  And he was also known for racing his Mini Jet Boats up and down the Jordan River although no formal races were ever held there.  

His reputation and expertise lead the Salt Lake City Police Department to request he build a "RACE A COP DRAG CAR" for a program to get teen's off the streets and on to the track to race.   That program continues to run today out at the Rocky Mountain Raceway in Magna (formerly known as Bonneville Speedway.  

 

 He assisted my brother with his own need for speed by building his first Drag Car, supporting his Go Garting & Circle Track Racing Days and according to my brother, dad was to blame for his over abundance of speeding tickets.

My dad had a variety of cars, boats, trucks and toys over the years yet his most prized possessions were his 1956 Corvette and his 1950 Merc which he proudly displayed at many Car Shows, Cruise Events and Nostalgic Drag Racing Events. Before my parents passing he had acquired his first Harley Davidson Motorcycle which he and Mom began enjoying together with their friends.

The 1st Annual "CRUISE ON IN - HULA ON OUT"  Fundraising event has been an absolute joy to prepare for.  Having the privilege to dedicate the event in Honor & Memory of my parents is the greatest opportunity I could ever receive.

 

I thoroughly enjoy meeting new people and I welcome each of you who has taken the time to read through this page to please come and introduce yourself  and share any memories you have of your loved one's with me.

The Theme for the Event is "KEEPING MEMORIES ALIVE" as this is something I strive to do everyday in honoring my parents!
